Founded in 1972, The Center for Independent Living (TheCIL) is celebrating its 50th Anniversary. TheCIL is the nation’s first Independent Living Center organized and operated by persons with disabilities, based on the principle that people with disabilities are entitled to the same rights as people without disabilities.

In honor of this history, we would like to collaborate with community artists, particularly those with disabilities and/or close to the disability rights movement, on a series of murals in Berkeley and Oakland that reflect our rich history and today’s movement for the rights, dignity, and leadership of people with disabilities as part of larger movements for social justice.

Project Description:

TheCIL is looking for 2 to 3 artists to create murals that reflect the journey of this historic organization and the Independent Living Movement that began in Berkeley, CA.  Through diverse funding sources, we are looking to partner with multiple artists with experience in community-designed or created murals, visual art, or large art installations. Murals will be placed on anniversary sites to-be-identified by TheCIL.

Murals may be located in the Berkeley and Oakland areas at sites of historic significance to the Independent Living Movement and the history of TheCIL. Murals should tell the stories of TheCIL’s leaders, stakeholders, and community members and their advocacy successes, and the accomplishments of disabled consumers who have been served by this center. TheCIL will prioritize artists with disabilities and/or who have intricate knowledge of the disability rights and justice movements.
