TheCIL's Residential Access Coordinator, Margie, and her team built a ramp for a lovely older woman who turned her front yard into a play area for the neighborhood kids. She intends to add some slot car tracks, which was our intern, Julia Wilson's idea on the sides of the ramp -- the kids in the neighborhood have been excitedly waiting for this ramp to be done. Julia, who started with us last year from UC Berkeley’s Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning, worked on this project. She turned Margie’s hand-drafted drawings into CAD (computer-aided design) drawings. This was her first time working on a building project, learning about lumber dimensions and building practices -- she is used to the more free-flowing landscape designs. She did a great job. They went down to the building department to get a permit. Once the department approved the plans, the contractor built the ramp. The ramp is made from redwood that is FSC certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, to ensure a lasting and healthy forest. The bottom of the ramp is decomposed granite rather than concrete, to allow better drainage of rainwater into the earth. Below are pictures of the progression.
